How to homeschool in Iowa
Under Independent Private Instruction nothing is filed. You answer a written request from the superintendent if one comes. Families who want dual enrollment or activities file Form A with the district. They also choose an assessment option, a supervising licensed teacher, or a Home School Assistance Program.

Iowa homeschool requirements
- Who can teach
- Any parent. The supervising-teacher option needs a licensed teacher.
- Days and hours
- Competent private instruction: at least 148 days, 37 a quarter.
- Subjects
- Mathematics, reading and language arts, science and social studies.
- Testing
- No testing under independent private instruction. Under the assessment option: an approved test, a licensed teacher's portfolio evaluation, or an accredited report card, done by May 31 and submitted by August 1. Tests need the 30th percentile plus grade level or six months of growth.
- Records
- No records required under independent private instruction.

Where it goes
Send Form A to your resident public school district office by September 1 (or within 14 days of starting mid-year). Nothing is filed for Independent Private Instruction.
