How to homeschool in Vermont

Send an enrollment notice to the Agency of Education online at least 10 business days before starting, so early August for a full year. It gives each child's name, age and birth date, the parents' contact details, and the parents' signatures. It also attests to assessment and 175 days of instruction. A child never enrolled in Vermont public school needs disability evidence. Returning families file a shorter yearly notice. The agency acknowledges within 10 business days. Enrollment for a year closes around April 1. Assess each child at the end of every year and keep the result. Tell the agency within 10 days if you stop.

Who can teach

Any parent. No diploma or certificate required.

Days and hours

The equivalent of 175 days.

Subjects

Basic communication skills (reading, writing, numbers), citizenship, history and government of Vermont and the U.S., physical education and comprehensive health, English, American and other literature, natural sciences, and fine arts.

Testing

An assessment at the end of every year, kept by you and not submitted: a standardized test, a report by a Vermont-certified teacher, your own report with a portfolio of at least four work samples, grades from an online school, or GED evidence.
