How to homeschool in Hawaii

Before starting, give a notice of intent to the principal of the public school your child would attend. Use Form 4140 or a letter with the child's name, address, phone, birth date and grade, and your signature. File again when the child moves between school levels or you move. Send the principal a progress report every year. In grades 3, 5, 8 and 10 it must be a standardized test. Tell the principal when you stop.

Who can teach

Any parent. No diploma or certificate required.

Days and hours

No set days or hours.

Subjects

No fixed list. The curriculum must be structured, cumulative and sequential and based on educational objectives.

Testing

Submit an annual progress report to the principal: a nationally normed test at grade level or showing a year of growth, an evaluation by a Hawaii-certified teacher, or your own written evaluation with work samples. In grades 3, 5, 8 and 10 the report must be a standardized test (state or comparable private test).

Records

A record of the planned curriculum: start and end dates, hours per week, subjects, how mastery is judged, and a list of materials.
