How to homeschool in Montana

Notify the county superintendent every school fiscal year (July 1 to June 30) that your child is being homeschooled, before the first day of public school.

Montana homeschool requirements

Who can teach
Any parent. No diploma or certificate required.
Days and hours
720 hours a year in grades 1 to 3. 1,080 hours in grades 4 to 12.
Subjects
An organized course of study in the basic subjects required of public schools: English language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, health, arts and career education.
Testing
No testing or evaluation required.
Records
Attendance, available to the county superintendent on request. Immunization records are no longer required (HB 778, 2025).
