How to homeschool in Rhode Island

Submit a notice of intent to your district's school committee. It assures that you will teach as many days as public schools, cover the required subjects, and keep an attendance register. The committee approves it, usually every year, under a local policy that may add forms or meetings. A denial can be appealed to the state education department.

Rhode Island homeschool requirements

Who can teach
Any parent. No diploma or certificate required.
Days and hours
The same number of days as public school, 180.
Subjects
Reading, writing, geography, arithmetic, health, physical education, U.S. history, Rhode Island history and the principles of American government, in English.
Testing
No state testing. The committee may set an assessment, accommodating your preferred method.
Records
An attendance register, available to the committee at year end.

Where it goes

Send the notice and home instruction plan to the school committee of your town, starting with the superintendent's office, for approval before starting. Return the attendance register at year end.
