How to homeschool in California
Operate as a home-based private school and file the Private School Affidavit online with the state between October 1 and 15 each year. Families who enroll with a private school satellite program (PSP) are covered by the program's affidavit. A credentialed parent may instead teach as a private tutor with no filing.

- Who can teach
- Instructors must be capable of teaching. No credential is required. A private tutor needs a California credential for the grade taught.
- Days and hours
- No set days or hours for private schools. A tutor teaches 3 hours a day for 175 days.
- Subjects
- The courses commonly taught in public schools, in English.
- Testing
- No testing or evaluation required.
- Records
- Attendance register, list of courses of study, list of instructors with qualifications, and immunization records or exemption.
