How it works in Ohio

  1. 1

Pay by card and download your receipt from Settings.

Ohio counts computer software, applications and subscriptions used directly for home education.

  2. 2

Keep your superintendent's excuse letter for the school year.

The credit is for students excused from attendance for home education, and Ohio asks for the letter if your return is reviewed.

  3. 3

Enter the credit on the Ohio Schedule of Credits.

It is the home school expenses credit (line 14 on the 2025 schedule).

  4. 4

File your IT 1040 by April 15.

You can file free through OH|TAX eServices.

  5. 5

If Ohio sends a review notice, answer it by its date.

Upload the letter and your receipts under "Respond to a letter or notice".

Sample receipt. Yours names your own family and students.
