How to homeschool in Pennsylvania
File a notarized affidavit or an unsworn declaration with your resident superintendent before starting, then by August 1 every year. It gives your name, each child's name and age, your address and phone, and an assurance that subjects are taught in English. Attach an outline of objectives by subject and the immunization and health records or exemptions. It also certifies that no adult in the home has a listed criminal conviction in the past five years. Keep a portfolio, have an evaluator certify it by June 30 every year, and test in grades 3, 5 and 8.

Pennsylvania homeschool requirements
- Who can teach
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Days and hours
- 180 days, or 900 hours elementary and 990 hours secondary.
- Subjects
- Elementary: English (spelling, reading, writing), arithmetic, civics, U.S. and Pennsylvania history, health and physiology, PE, music, art, geography, science, and safety education including fire prevention. Secondary: English (language, literature, speech, composition), math (general math, algebra, geometry), social studies (civics, U.S. and Pennsylvania history, world history), health, PE, music, art, geography, science, safety education.
- Testing
- A standardized test in grades 3, 5 and 8 in math and reading from the state's approved list (not given by a parent), and every year an evaluation of the portfolio and an interview by a licensed psychologist, certified teacher, or nonpublic school teacher or administrator. Submit the evaluator's certification to the superintendent by June 30.
- Records
- A portfolio: a contemporaneous log naming reading materials, work samples, test results and the annual evaluation.
