How to homeschool in Maryland
File the state Notice of Consent form with your local superintendent 15 days before starting. Choose the portfolio option or an umbrella school (church, church-exempt or state-approved). Before each school year, confirm you are continuing. Report changes promptly.

Maryland homeschool requirements
- Who can teach
- Any parent. No diploma or certificate required.
- Days and hours
- Regular and thorough instruction of sufficient duration.
- Subjects
- Portfolio option: English, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, health and physical education.
- Testing
- Portfolio option: the superintendent's representative may review the portfolio up to three times a year at a mutually agreed time and place. Deficiencies give 30 days to correct. Umbrella options: none from the state.
- Records
- A portfolio of instructional and reading materials, writings, worksheets, workbooks, creative materials and tests.
